Numbers

Numbers to keep in your phone

  • Crisis help by phone, 1-888-429-8167: the Provincial Mental Health & Addictions Crisis Line from Nova Scotia Health costs nothing, is toll-free and keeps calls confidential. Someone picks up at every hour on every day, gambling worries included.
  • Mental Health and Addictions Intake, 1-855-922-1122, is for help that is not urgent. On weekdays the line is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with hours extended to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • The Responsible Gambling Resource Centre at the Halifax casino, 902-424-8663, offers confidential support and information on self-exclusion.
  • Self-exclusion from Casino Nova Scotia can be started by any casino staff member, or through the resource centre.

Self-exclusion

How the self-exclusion program works

Both the Halifax casino and the Sydney casino are covered by the Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program of Casino Nova Scotia. Its reach extends beyond the gaming floors to include the restaurants and entertainment venues. Self-exclusion may be chosen for 6 months, for one year, for three years, or with no end date. Prizes cannot be won by a self-excluded person.

And who starts it? Any casino staff member can, and so can the Responsible Gambling Resource Centre at the Halifax casino. To begin, the nearest staff member is enough, in the guide's view. For questions beforehand, the resource centre answers at 902-424-8663.

Decide it over dinner

Two things are worth settling over dinner, before the show starts: how much the floor gets, and the time you will walk out. Saying both out loud to whoever came along makes them harder to stretch once the curtain is down. Leave the card you would use for extra cash at home. Then the decision at the table stays the one made over dinner, not one made at midnight.

Questions

Asked at the desk

Can you call the crisis line at 3 a.m.?

Yes, at any hour. Calling 1-888-429-8167 reaches the Provincial Mental Health & Addictions Crisis Line of Nova Scotia Health, which picks up at any hour, on any day. No charge applies, what is said stays confidential, and worries about gambling fall within its scope.

Does casino self-exclusion have to end?

Not unless you choose a fixed term. Casino Nova Scotia's Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program lets a person pick 6 months, three years, one year or an indefinite term.

Is there anyone to talk to inside the casino?

The Responsible Gambling Resource Centre is at the Halifax casino. It offers confidential support and self-exclusion information, and its number is 902-424-8663.
